Madrid is set to welcome a prestigious address born from an unexpected alliance. El Corte Inglés, the Spanish retail giant, is partnering with IHG to create its very first luxury hotel: a Kimpton, a brand renowned for its boutique approach and relaxed luxury, which will open its flagship establishment on the highly sought-after Calle Goya by 2030.
El Corte Inglés’ Grand Return to Hospitality
For the Spanish conglomerate, the operation marks a firm return to a sector it had left after divesting its stakes in the Only You Hotels and Ayre networks. This time, the strategy changes: partnering with a global luxury brand and maintaining direct involvement in operations. For its part, IHG, which already operates around sixty hotels and nearly 12,300 rooms in Spain, is introducing its Kimpton brand to the capital for the first time.

A 5-star Kimpton on Calle Goya
The future establishment will take up residence in two buildings adjacent to the El Corte Inglés department store on Calle Goya, at the intersection of number 89 and 3 Calle Conde de Peñalver. The five-star hotel will feature 100 rooms across seven floors, spanning over 9,000 square metres, an intimate format true to Kimpton’s boutique philosophy. Refined restaurants and common areas will make it a true living space, in the heart of the Salamanca district, renowned for its luxury boutiques and galleries.
The Kimpton Signature: Relaxed Luxury
Acquired by IHG in 2015, Kimpton has built a global reputation with its boutique hotels featuring bold design, personalised service, and a culture of conviviality. Each address is conceived as a unique entity, mirroring its city. In Madrid, one can expect a sophisticated interpretation of Spanish aesthetics, chic and relaxed, far from the sometimes more formal codes of traditional palaces.
Madrid, Rising Capital of Luxury
The Spanish capital has established itself as one of Europe’s most dynamic destinations for high-end hospitality. Renovations of historic palaces and the arrival of international brands are reshaping the hotel landscape. In this context, the positioning of a Kimpton, with its strong identity and accessible luxury, seems particularly relevant, and the 2030 deadline allows the market time to mature.
Our Perspective
This announcement illustrates the strategic movements driving the luxury sector. By combining prestigious retail and hospitality, El Corte Inglés outlines a new model for a luxury urban destination, where hotel guests access department store services and retail captures hotel clientele. More than a real estate operation, it is a declaration of intent for the future of high-end Spanish tourism.
