Maldives or Mauritius: which island for a luxury holiday in 2026?

In brief
  • The Maldives: total seclusion (often one island = one resort), overwater villas and turquoise lagoons. Ideal for couples and honeymoons. More expensive.
  • Mauritius: more affordable and far more varied (culture, hiking, golf, excursions). Perfect for families and active stays.
  • On budget, the Maldives usually cost more (long-haul flight + seaplane transfer). Mauritius suits a wider range of budgets.
  • When to go: the Maldives mainly from December to April; Mauritius is pleasant most of the year.

Maldives or Mauritius: the verdict in brief

Choose the Maldives if you want absolute privacy, postcard beaches and pure relaxation as a couple; choose Mauritius if you want variety (sea, culture, nature, golf) and to travel with family without blowing the budget. Both islands play in the luxury league, but with two different philosophies.

Scenery and atmosphere

The Maldives is the luxury of isolation: one atoll, one island, one resort, and nothing but the lagoon. You come to disconnect, not to sightsee. Mauritius, by contrast, is a real inhabited island: villages, markets, mountains, botanical gardens and golf courses. You can rent a car and explore, which is impossible in the Maldives.

Budget: which one is more expensive?

For comparable standards, the Maldives almost always cost more than Mauritius. Factor in the long-haul flight (often 700 to 1,500 € return depending on season) plus, in the Maldives, a seaplane or speedboat transfer to your resort (often 200 to 500 € per person). Mauritius, better connected and larger, offers a wider range of stays and all-inclusive packages, so more flexible budgets.

How to get there and how long is the flight?

Count roughly 11 hours to Mauritius and 12 to 15 hours (with a layover) to reach Malé in the Maldives. In Mauritius the airport serves the island directly. In the Maldives, landing in Malé is only a step: the real journey begins with the transfer to your atoll, often by seaplane, a spectacular experience in itself.

When to go?

The best time for the Maldives runs from December to April (dry season), when prices peak. Mauritius enjoys pleasant weather most of the year, with a mild austral winter (May to November). For better rates, aim for the shoulder seasons.

For a honeymoon or a couple

For a honeymoon, the Maldives keep the edge thanks to their overwater villas, private dinners on the sand and unmatched privacy. Mauritius is still very romantic, but its strength lies elsewhere: you can alternate cocooning and discovery.

For a family holiday

For a family stay, Mauritius wins: kids’ clubs, varied activities, excursions and all-inclusive options are more numerous and more affordable. The Maldives work for families too, but the seclusion of a single island and the cost of transfers weigh more.

Maldives vs Mauritius: the comparison table

Maldives Mauritius
Atmosphere Seclusion, 1 island = 1 resort Inhabited island, varied, to explore
Budget High (flight + seaplane) More flexible
Flight from Europe 12 to 15 h + transfer ~11 h, direct
Best season December to April Most of the year
Ideal for Couples, honeymoons Families, active stays
