Bürgenstock Hotel: everything you need to know about the Swiss palace of the US-Iran deal

In brief
  • The Bürgenstock Resort is a Swiss palace perched nearly 500 metres above Lake Lucerne, next to Lucerne, in Switzerland.
  • It has just hosted the negotiations of the agreement between the United States and Iran, in June 2026, two years after the Summit on Peace in Ukraine.
  • The estate brings together four hotels, a 10,000 sqm Alpine Spa with an infinity pool, and dining honoured with 3 Michelin Keys.
  • You reach it by boat from Lucerne, then aboard the world’s oldest electric funicular.

Why is everyone talking about the Bürgenstock? Because this palace suspended above Lake Lucerne has once again entered diplomatic history: this is where Americans and Iranians met, in June 2026, to seal their agreement. Here is everything you need to know about one of the most secretive and spectacular addresses in Switzerland.

Why was the Bürgenstock chosen for the US-Iran agreement?

The choice of this Alpine summit is no accident: isolated on its ridge and reachable only by boat and funicular, the Bürgenstock can be closed off and secured within hours. Switzerland has made it its diplomatic stage of choice. The same resort had already hosted the Summit on Peace in Ukraine, in June 2024. To welcome the delegations, the estate was entirely closed to the public, from Wednesday to Sunday, and public transport links to the summit suspended. As the agreement came into force forty-eight hours earlier than expected, Switzerland was deprived of the solemn ceremony it had been preparing, yet the working sessions did take place high above the lake.

Where is the Bürgenstock hotel located?

The Bürgenstock overlooks Lake Lucerne from a ridge rising almost 500 metres above the water, in the municipality of Obbürgen, in the canton of Nidwalden. The estate covers more than 60 hectares, facing the peaks of Pilatus and Rigi. This eagle’s-nest position, both close to Lucerne and entirely set apart, explains its aura of a refuge away from the world.

How do you get to the Bürgenstock?

The most spectacular way up to the Bürgenstock is still the boat from Lucerne, followed by the world’s oldest electric funicular, which climbs from the Kehrsiten pier. Once there, the Hammetschwand Lift, Europe’s tallest outdoor elevator at 152.8 metres, lifts visitors to a 360-degree viewpoint over the lake, Pilatus and Rigi. You can also reach the estate by road.

One estate, four hotels

The Bürgenstock is not a hotel but a true luxury village bringing together four addresses. The Bürgenstock Hotel & Alpine Spa, the contemporary flagship extended by a history-laden Heritage wing; the Waldhotel by Bürgenstock, devoted to health and wellbeing on the forest edge; the Taverne 1879, more intimate and convivial; and the Residence Suites, including the Grand and Panorama Residence Suites designed for longer stays and families.

The Alpine Spa and its infinity pool

The Alpine Spa’s infinity pool seems to tip into the void, 500 metres above the lake: it is the most famous image of the Bürgenstock. The spa unfolds around 10,000 square metres of treatments, saunas, baths and relaxation areas, making it one of the largest in Europe. The Waldhotel adds a medical and preventive dimension, in a very Swiss approach to wellbeing.

The Bürgenstock’s restaurants and bars

When it comes to dining, the resort gathers around a dozen restaurants and bars, and holds 3 Michelin Keys for the quality of its hospitality. Fine dining takes place at Verbena by Christian Scharrer, while Spices Kitchen & Terrace travels through Asia, the Oak Grill focuses on grills by the pool, and Parisa offers a rare Persian cuisine under its dome. The Lakeview Bar & Cigar Lounge rounds things off for late evenings.

The rooms and suites

From rooms to panoramic suites, most accommodations open onto the lake through wide bay windows. Contemporary decor, fine materials and Alpine light set the tone, with a range that runs from the elegant room to the vast Residence Suites with several bedrooms, ideal for entertaining or for long stays.

The resort’s largest suites, such as the Royal Suite, are the ones favoured by official delegations and visiting heads of state. Spacious living rooms, several bedrooms, dressing rooms and panoramic terraces: these high-end apartments offer the privacy and security sought during summits, with the same sweeping view over Lake Lucerne.

The Bürgenstock, a century of stars

Before heads of state, the Bürgenstock was the haunt of the stars of cinema’s golden age. Founded in 1873, the estate saw Audrey Hepburn marry Mel Ferrer in its little chapel in 1954, and Sophia Loren live there for several years in a chalet. After nine years of works and half a billion Swiss francs invested, the resort reopened transformed, without losing any of that glamorous memory.

How to stay at the Bürgenstock?

Staying at the Bürgenstock is an experience rather than a simple hotel night, in the league of the great Alpine palaces. Rates vary widely depending on the season, the type of accommodation and the hotels within the estate; it is best to book well in advance, especially in summer and over the holidays. To check availability and plan your visit, the simplest route is the resort’s official website.

Practical information: prices, times and official website

The Bürgenstock Hotel & Alpine Spa has 211 rooms and suites, including 76 suites, and rates vary widely with the season. As a guide, entry-level rooms start at around 700 to 800 Swiss francs per night in low season, and climb well beyond 1,000 francs for suites and in high season (summer and the year-end holidays). A suite stay comes with a credit of up to 200 Swiss francs to spend on site, as well as early check-in and late check-out subject to availability.

  • Check-in / check-out: as in most palaces, arrival from 3 pm and departure before 12 noon, to be confirmed when booking.
  • Breakfast: a generous buffet served every morning, included in many rates.
  • Included access: free shuttle boat from Lucerne and funicular, free access to the 10,000 sqm Alpine Spa.
  • Address: Bürgenstock Resort, 6363 Obbürgen, canton of Nidwalden, Switzerland.
  • Official website: burgenstockresort.com
